REGGIE BUSH VS. MIKE BELL
For yesterday, I will give Reggie Bush a D+. He looked tentative returning punts and I think not playing in the preseason made him a bit rusty on punt returns. I thought he looked alright as a receiver. I was happy to see that they went deep to him on a couple of passes. His running left a lot to be desired but he only had 7 carries. He had that one decent carry where he almost broke it but got tripped up. You could definitely see the difference between him and Mike Bell. Bell looked decisive and explosive while Bush looked tentative on his runs. Hopefully, next week he performs better but I think this may have been Payton's plan the whole time. For the majority of the game, it seemed that Bush was lining up in the slot and was very seldomly in the backfield.
Payton told a story on Sirius this morning that before the preseason started, his son was doing an online draft and his son asked him who he should take in the 9th round? Payton told him if Mike Bell is available to, pick him because he was definitely going to get a lot of touches this year. Payton ended it saying how much he really likes Mike Bell and he believes that he will continue to be a big part of the offense.
