Quick Word From The Bird: Yanks Win with CC in Game 7

DARIO AKA THE REALIST WRITES:

T-Bird,

Cliff Lee thoroughly dominated that game man. Lee has a .54 ERA in the playoffs. WOW!!!! It sucked. CC pitched really good also except for those two homeruns to Utley. The Yankee bullpen is a real issue. Hughes walked the first two batters. He struggled in Game 5 against the Angels also. What's up with him? Philadelphia has a team equal to the Yankees but people like Matsui and Swisher have to step up at the bottom of that order. Swisher has been struggling really bad in the playoffs. Dude has 4 hits in 35 at bats. Wow!!!

Your thoughts on the World Series?

      TAYLOR AKA THE BIRDMAN RESPONDS:

Cliff Lee has been dominant, his "spike"-curve is amazing. It seems that the grip he uses gives him the ability to have "feel" even in cold weather, which is something that hurt Lackey in the ALCS (see his game 1 start in NY vs. his performance in game 5 in Anaheim).

Also, consider how suspect Doc looked for Toronto down the stretch and how much Ricciardi wanted for him. I am sure the Philly organization are thanking their lucky stars they shunned Toronto and made the Lee deal. It is amazing to think that he was sent back down to AAA in '06. It is also amazing to think of what Cleveland would look like if they had the resources or desire to keep their players (especially if Fausto Carmona was able to sustain his 07 success). But they have gotten great players back in their deals (see Matt LaPorta from the CC trade). So with a new manager they will compete in that division again shortly.

Back to the series… Not making any excuses, but the playoff format has got to change. First the Series ends too late in the year, I mean November, come on. This makes weather a major factor. The long layoffs also seem to throw hitters and relievers out of rhythm. I really think this is why the Yankees lineup seems to go to sleep every year. As for the bullpen… You have a lot of young arms out there and I think the workload of a full season at the major league level has worn them down.

With the above being said, the lineup needs a major spark. As great as I think Swisher has been, especially in April when A-Rod was out. He needs to be replaced in Right by Eric Hinske. I think Hinske has equal defense and just as much potential power. Plus, sometimes change for the sake of change can be good. This could provide a spark and be a wakeup to the rest of the order. As for the bullpen, I think that despite a few bad performances we still have the advantage, especially Mo vs. Lidge. Mark my words, Lidge if given the oppurtunity, will blow a major save in this series. Ever since Pujols took him deep in that series a few years ago he has had a knack for blowing big games. Last year was an outlier, because he has looked like his old self at times this year.

With last night over, I still like our prospects for the rest of the series. Pedro has not faced a legit American League team in years. Plus remember the "Who's your daddy?" incident?

Hamels has looked human at best lately. Burnett will bounce back tonight, Andy is Andy and CC is better on short rest (and he wasn't that bad last night). The bullpen will be ok and we have a definite advantage if we can get a lead to Mo. I think we win game 2 & 3: game 4 is a toss-up (if it is vs. Lee in Philly). Even if it gets to a 3-2 Philly advantage, I like us for 6 & 7 in NY, with CC going in game 7.

Just In From The Beach: Wanted Boozer

THE REALIST WRITES:

Beach,

I guess I have to be the first one to say it since both of you are being quite silent on the real subject and that is Suck-troit Basketball. Let's proclaim right here and right now:

YOU WILL NOT LIKE VILLANUEVA!!!!!!

He plays soft, does not play defense, does not rebound as evidenced by his career 6.3 rebounds per game and he shoots WAY too many threes as his career 743 attempts explain. I like Ben Gordon even though he is a low percentage (career 43.7%) volume shooter that does not get other people involved( career 3 assists) but he makes clutch shots. I think Headband Charlie is a selfish player and now that he has the money, he will get worst as a player and he will bring the pistons down UNLESS they get a banger type true center who rebounds and defends above average to play alongside of him and let's face the facts and say that Chris Wilcox, Kwame Brown and a last leg Ben Wallace does not fit that mold. So, just like the Michigan Wolverines have the talent pool and found a way to mess it up (Rich Rodriquez), the Pistons had the money and signed a undersized "shoot too much" two guard and a weak power forward. With that being said, there will be no 8th spot in the east for the Pistons. Toronto replaces the Pistons my brothers.

JUSTIN AKA "JUST IN FROM THE BEACH" BEACH RESPONDS:

Where do I begin? I guess I will start here..... As much as I dont want to say it but you are right about the former Huskie. I didnt like him in college and I really dont like him now. I agree with you completely that he doesn't fit into the DETROIT system. He is another Rasheed minus the talent and the shooting ability. Dwyer and I have been saying all along that we wanted to get a true center (Boozer or the dude from Toronto).

We wanted somebody that could play with there back to the basket. I do like Mr. Gordon thought. If there is anything that DETROIT can do is change a person's attitude (Rasheed). Wallace was known as a loud mouth trouble maker and nobody thought he would be a good fit. Now he still is a loud mouth but he has not been the problem that everybody thought he would be, including me, I will admit it. They have needed somebody that get his own shot when the offense isn't working and Iverson was NOT the answer. HaHa, the answer get it, sorry.

I think the team aspect will have some effect on him and he wont be as much of a ball hog as he is now. There is the potential that Gordon and baldy will get into a "I'm the man" mind frame and start taking every shot they get. If thats the case, then this season is a wash.

Da Wire: Your Right, Not 8th but 6th or 7th

THE REALIST WRITES:

Da Wire,

I guess I have to be the first one to say it since both of you are being quite silent on the real subject and that is Suck-troit Basketball. Let's proclaim right here and right now:

JASON AKA "DA WIRE" DWYER RESPONDS:

Detroit still makes the playoffs. I would say that you are wrong about Villanueva if I remember right he had his career highs last year in Milwaukee. The league is going to big athletic guys who can shoot from deep and also can create off the dribble to create matchup problems (Orlando Magic). I think with Villanueva it will stretch the floor and allow the guards to get to the rim. We will run with three guards a lot. I think with Will Bynum, Rodney Stuckey and Ben Gordon’s ability to get to the rim, it will put a lot of opposing bigs in foul trouble.

I also think Kwame is a serviceable center. He is a big body and with Wallace there to mentor him he will only get better on the defensive side of the ball. Your right about the pistons not getting the 8th seed because they will get the 6th or 7th seed!!!!!!!!!!

AB's Oaktown Beatdown: Wind Out of My Sails

That loss took all of the wind out of my sails, man. Just when I thought they were on to something, they go and blow up like that. I have to write them off again for the 5th year in a row. And you know what they say, once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a TREND. Ughh. I guess 6 times (it's been 6 years now) means your team just sucks!

I was all excited about writing up an article about my experience in Oakland, and that loss just shot that all to hell. I've actually been looking forward to basketball season because of this. I see that my Suns came back from behind to beat the Clippers last night. I'm probably a bigger University of Arizona Wildcat basketball fan though, so I'm anxious for the college hoops season to get going.

Other than that, I have to take joy in watching the teams I hate lose. LOL!

Peace, man.

Quick Word From the Bird: What Made Montana Grizzly Football?

DARIO AKA" THE REALIST" ASKS TAYLOR AKA "THE BIRDMAN" SEEBERGER:

Bird,

How do you make the playoffs in 16 straight years? How do you have the largest seating capacity in The Big Sky Conference with 25,000 plus seats? How do you have the biggest JumboTron in college sports? How does a guy parachute from the sky and land on the field? How do you have 16 Big Sky Championships? How do you share or win 11 of the last 16 Big Sky Championships? How do you win a Division I-AA title in 1995 and 2001? How do you compete in 6 total championship games in the last thirteen years? How do you get equal or more players drafted to the NFL in the last six years than Memphis, Mississipi State, Rice, South Florida, Temple, Appalachian State, Marshall University, Idaho and only one less than Washington? How do you do all this with a recruiting region significantly smaller than most other schools?

TAYLOR SEEBERGER AKA THE BIRDMAN REPLIES:

Well this is a very good question and there has been much debate to this, so let’s start from the beginning. UM football had some shining moments before the mid 80’s, namely Jack Swarthout’s two 10-0 campaigns in 69 & 70, which ended in trips to the Camelia Bowl. But, I would point to the mid 80’s as the beginning of the sustained success and start of the evolution that you are referring to. I would point to three people who were the most vital components of this.

The University of Montana football coaching staff. Jack is pictured in the top row, center.

First would be Dennis Washington, a Missoula industrialist who is now Forbe’s 61st richest American, with a net worth of 4.2 billion. He was the donor who put up the cash to begin construction on Washington Grizzly Stadium which opened in 86.

While old Dornblaser was an ok spot, having a great facility on campus has been a major draw for both fans and student athletes. While the stadium has gone through major upgrades since then (96 end-zone seats, 02 expansion of the end-zone seating, 08 another expansion and the addition of the premium seats and enclosed premium seating area on the eastside), Washington is almost solely responsible for the stadium we have today.

Next would be Don Read, the coach who brought the “Air Bear” offense. Ahh, the good old days of throwing on almost every down and seeing scores like the 70-14 blowout of Stephen F. Austin in the 1995 semifinal game. He was also a guy who used UM’s burgeoning resources to recruit well and really was UM football’s biggest fan and supporter. Through the mid 80’s into the early 90’s Don had many good QB’s that ran his system well (see Brad Lebo and Grady Bennett). However, no one fit his system better than Mr. Montana football, the best QB to ever play in the Big Sky Conference, the Legend of the Fall, 1995 Payton Award winner, Dave Dickenson.

Dave was everything that his successor at CMR High (Ryan Leaf) was not. Savvy, smart, athletic, the most humble likable attitude imaginable, with a knack for taking broken plays and turning them into magical long gains and td’s. He was just the type of person you could not help but love, a real winner at every level and in every facet of life. Just a few stats about DD… Back to back AA MT State Championships at CMR High. In 1995 when he graduated from UM he had the highest completion percentage, highest percentage of passes for a touchdown, and fewest interceptions per pass in NCAA Division I-AA history. In his college career (including playoff games) he completed 1,015 of 1,477 passes (68.7%) for 13,486 yards, with 116 touchdowns and only 26 interceptions, and was responsible for 137 total touchdowns (116 passing and 21 rushing). In 1995, Dickenson's senior season, he threw for 5,676 yards in fifteen games, including 1,500 in four playoff games.

These three people were the catalyst for the 94 team which lost to Youngstown State in the semi’s and more importantly the 95 team which captured Montana’s first title with a win over Marshall at Marshall (I still argue that it is incredibly unfair that they were given the bid to host the title game) and subsequently turned the corner permanently for Grizzly Football. While I would argue that the best UM team of all time was the 96 team that lost to Randy Moss’ Marshall team in the title game.

No one team made more of an impact on Grizzly Football than the 95 title team. The excitement they generated helped solidify the support that helped MT become what it is today.

In the years that followed Wayne Hogan was brought in as AD and he focused on turning UM Football into a product. This is the time when things like the pregame choreography was developed, the jumbotron was brought in and capital drives to secure funding for expansion happened. The fact that he made UM Football an experience was a big factor in continuing momentum, drawing crowds and gaining support for the program.

Another dynamic to consider is the fact that MT has no professional sports team, thus Grizzly Football is the biggest show in the state. They garner almost everyone’s support and attention. Attention from alum and fans who talk up the program every chance they get, make donations, buy gear (note the fact that soon MT will be the only FCS school with a Nike Team store on campus and that they are usually in the top 30??? for NCAA apparel sales).

All of this has allowed MT to get their pick of instate recruits, attract top dropdown athletes and get top out of state recruits from WA, OR and CA (sometimes getting guys who were being considered by larger schools). The gap in talent level is what helps them dominate the conference every year, which in turn leads to the continued playoff bids.

It is also the fact that they are getting top talent who may be overlooked by other schools that has led to the success UM athletes have had in getting drafted or signing FA NFL deals. While I don’t think the national exposure they get from televised playoff games hurts. Most notable may be the fact that Missoula is home to Ken Staninger, a very established and succesful agent. Ken is the man who negotiated Mark Rypien’s contract that at the time was the second largest in NFL history. He has been great at not only getting guys workouts, etc… but also coaching them on ”how to get drafted or signed”.

Now here is where the native Montanan in my likes to proudly point out the fact that most of the guys to get signed or drafted in the last few years have been native Montanans. Dan Carpenter, Kroy Bierman, Colt Anderson, Tuff Harris, Dylan McFarland etc… are all guys who spent their prep career in MT.

This presents the chicken or egg argument. Were these guys good players who were overlooked by other schools and then came to UM? Or did UM make these good athletes the great football players they became? Either way there is no denying that UM does produce a lot of NFL caliber players who find success in the league. This is also not a recent phenomenon as Tim Hauck, Kirk Scrafford and Scott “Lurch” Gragg prove.

Woo, Let Me Pick a T-Bone With You: Mike Nolan My Brother

THE REALIST WRITES:

T-Bone,

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Charger Game was the game I picked the Broncos to lose. If they can beat their biggest rival coming off a bye week and a lost, the Broncos are for real. I might have to retract my statement about the Chargers winning the divison because as it stands, the Broncos have beaten San Digeo and New England and that was two of the games I said they would lose. They run the ball very well, they don't turn the ball over, they have a big play receiver and they rush the hell out of the passer. T-Bone, you might have something special on your hands. I am convinced and I know you are riding on cloud nine right now. As of now, McDaniels is a good coach. The Broncos play what I call WINNING FOOTBALL.

They seem to game plan for each team thoroughly and so far, they seem to have the right combination of veterans and young players to make a deep run in the playoffs. I had them at 9-7 but with the two extra wins against NE and @ SD, that would make them 11-5. WHAT? 11-5 !!! WHAT? 11-5!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT? Getting Funky on the Mic like a whole batch of ____________ Greens. Yes.

Your thoughts?

TYLER AKA T-BONE RESPONDS:

Yes, I agree. To say that I am surprised with their record would be an understatement. To say that I am on cloud nine is about right. McDaniels does look like a pretty good coach as of right now. But the part of the equation that most people seem to overlook, and the part that I think has had the most significant change is Mike Nolan. Last year that defense could not stop Tardy McBoatlifter.

This year, they cant be stopped. The defense is good in the first half. The defense is SUPERB in the second. They have only allowed, what, 10 second half points this season? Are you kidding me? They shut out the New England Patriots in the second half. The same team, I might add, that scored 59 against the Titans. You have to give props to Nolan for scheming number one, but also for second half adjustments. The reason I give Nolan the most credit is because McDaniels already had a good offense to work with. He had all of the key pieces. He just had to figure out how to use them with a new and very different quarterback. But Nolan took over one of the worst defenses in the league and has turned them into a force to be reckoned with.

I do give McDaniels props for good play calling. (a quarterback sneak to get denver in field goal position was a great call, even though they missed the try) I also give him props for staying out of Nolans way. He knows what kind of defensive coach he has, so he just stays out of the way and focuses on offense. Altogether, I think they do have something special. I can't wait to see what happens in Baltimore.

Later,
Tyler

FanSportNET.com NFL Pick Em Challenge: Week 6

Wow,  this is the second week in a row that The FanSportNET.com NFL Pick Em league was less than stellar. In week 6,  ONLY 12 out of 63 people won over 10 games. That is miserable 22%. We need to pick it up. I got a call from Skip Bayless and he said, "Get it together!!"

Please double check your picks and let me know if I made any mistakes. For the two of you who forgot to make your picks last week, you were assigned all of the home games. Again, please make sure to check my math because it is possible that I could have made some mistakes. Also, send me any corrections and I will update your record. There are only 13 games this week because the Ravens, Broncos, Lions, Jaguars, Seahawks, and Titans are all on their bye weeks so for you fantasy football players, don't forget to make adjustments. Also, the 4-0 New Orleans Saints BEAT the 5-0 New York Giants in Week 6 to move to 5-0. GO SAINTS!!!!  Also, I can't leave Mr. Jacobson and his  6-0 VIKINGS out because they had an impressive victory against the Ravens last week. My last shout out goes to Adam "Oaktown Beatdown" Burchett because his Raiders held the Eagles to 9 points for their second win of the season.
