Gallinari vs Wesley Johnson: Wesley Johnson can be a productive starter for the Lakers.

I took 18 games last year that Wesley Johnson played more than 25 minutes per game. During that span, he averaged 33.1 minutes per game.

In those games, Phoenix win-loss record was 5-13, and Johnson averaged 14.7 points, 45.1 FG%, 36.6 3P%, 77.3 FT%, 4.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.6 blocks, 1.5 TO's.

In 32.5 MPG last year , Gallinari averaged 16.2 points, 41.8 FG%, 37.3 3P%, 82.2 FT%, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.5 blocks, 1.6 TO's.

In 38.5 MPG last year , Nicolas Batum averaged 14.3 points, 42.3 FG%, 37.2 3P%, 84.8 FT%, 5.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.1 blocks and 2.6 TO's.

Although Batum and Gallinari are two years younger, taller, have more experience as starters and probably are a tadbit more aggressive driving the ball , in the last 4 seasons, Gallinari has averaged 30 plus minutes a game and has never shot over 36.5% from the 3-Point Line. In the last 3 seasons where Batum has averaged 30 plus minutes per game, Batum's highest average points per game is 14.3. However, by almost all of our standards, they are both seen as a above average NBA starter at SF.

Also, Denver (106.1 points per game) was the highest scoring team in the league and Phoenix was 21st (95.1 points per game).  Even with Alvin Gentry, Phoenix was 9th in pace and Denver was 2nd.

Portland also has Damian Lillard, Wesley Matthews and LaMarcus Aldridge to take pressure of Batum as a player.

Denver has Andre Miller who is a much better backup point guard than whoever Phoenix had behind Dragic.

I conclude that Wesley Johnson can be just as productive as Gallinari and Batum if given the opportunity.

What do you think?

Kobe Bryant 2008-10 vs. LeBron James 2011-13 vs MJ 1990-1992 Playoff Stats

Article from Double Dribble Blog:

http://doubledribble.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/kobe-bryant-2008-10-vs-lebron-james-2011-13-playoff-stats/

Kobe Bryant 2008-10 vs. LeBron James 2011-13 Playoff Stats

Player G      MP ORB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PTS FG% 3P% FT% TS%

Kobe Bryant   22.3 40.7 0.9 5.7 5.5 1.6 0.7 3.1 29.8 0.466 0.340 0.845 0.570
LeBron James 22.3 42.8 1.8 8.8 6.0 1.8 0.9 3.2 26.6 0.486 0.336 0.758 0.575

M.Jordan*     18.3 41.5 1.4 6.6 7.0 2.4 1.0 3.2 34.1 0.513 0.364 0.849 0.587

It’s fun to compare LeBron James to Michael Jordan, but looking at the playoffs stats of Kobe’s 3 finals runs from 2008-2010 versus LeBron’s 3 finals runs from 2011-13 is a lot closer. In fact if you ignore the metrics and just look at the actual numbers, it’s very tough. Everything is extremely close except LeBron has 3 more rebounds per game and Kobe has three more points per game. Turnovers are even. Assists are nearly even. TS% is nearly even, LeBron is .005 better (or 1/2 a percentage point better).

I didn’t expect that. LeBron is touted as a pillar of efficiency, and Kobe is thought of as something of a conscienceless volume shooter, but the numbers show relatively even efficiency and production in the playoffs.

I tucked MJ’s 1990-1992 playoff numbers into the bottom there. They aren’t pace-adjusted or anything, so they can be quibbled with if you feel it necessary, but his advantages in efficiency and scoring are significant enough that I’d predict a pretty decent lead even if Kobe and Bron gained a possession in the translation (I’ve run pace adjustments for both in the past over these spans of years, and it does amount to approximately 1 extra offensive and 1 extra defense possession per game, not enough to make a major impact).

The figures in this post aren’t intended to prove anything in and of themselves. The numbers just surprised me enough that I felt like I should share them.

First African Amercan Coach in NBA History

Referees who officiated a lot of Chamberlain's and Russell's games said that both of them probably averaged at least six to eight blocks per game over their careers, which would put both of them ahead of the "official" all-time leaders by a comfortable margin

John Kundla After 1959 Finals:

“That’s quite a twist, isn’t it, having a defensive player mean the difference?” said Kundla. “We don’t fear the Celtics without Bill Russell. Take him out and we can beat them … He’s the guy who whipped us psychologically. Russell has our club worrying every second. Every one of the five men is thinking Russell is covering him on every play. He blocks a shot, and before you know it, Boston is getting a basket, and a play by Russell has done it.”

Bill Russell is known as the greatest winner in the history of team sports.

Some Say He had the Greatest Total Basketball Career Ever With Three NCAA Championships

Author of the Most Unique and Famous Move in NBA History " The Sky Hook"

The Dunk was Outlawed in College When he was  a Sophomore

In 1968, he declared his Islamic faith and joined black athletes in boycotting the Mexico City Olympics.

Kareem's crowning moment occurred in 1985, when he drove the Lakers past Boston in the NBA Finals, breaking a streak that had seen the Celtics beat the Lakers eight straight times in the Finals. Prospects were bleak after Boston won Game 1 by 34 points. But with the 38-year-old Abdul-Jabbar playing inspired ball, the Lakers stormed to a 109-102 win in Game 2, the pivotal game in the series.

Kareem was splendid, scoring 30 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. The rebound total was one less than his playoff career high, and the 30 points were 18 more than he had scored in Game 1. Kareem went on to score 36 points in a Game 5 victory and 29 in the decisive sixth game. He was awarded his second Finals MVP Award, 14 years after winning his first.

The player who created his own shot and combining his college and NBA career, he could be the best basketball player of all time.

Chamberlain is the only player in NBA history to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game in a season, a feat he accomplished nine times. He is also the only player to average at least 30 points and 20 rebounds per game over the entire course of his NBA career.

There is an Urban Legend that when he was in the NBA he picked up a Tractor Trailor and he was known as literally the strongest man in the world.

NBA Record - Most Points Per Game in a season (50.4 in the 1961-62 season)

I will stop there:

Wilt Chamberlain LITERALLY has too many NBA records to list in this blog. Just know he has just about every scoring and rebounding single game, season and career record there is except for a select few.

Game 6 of the 1980 Finals Johnson recorded 42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals in a 123-107 win, while playing all five positions. Johnson became the only rookie to win the NBA Finals MVP award, and his clutch performance is still regarded as one of the best ever.

He also became 1 of 4 players to win NCAA and NBA Championships in consecutive years.

Magic is without a doubt the Most Charismatic Player to Ever Play the Game

6) Kobe "Black Mamba" Bryant

81 Point Game Second Highest Total Ever in a Single Game

2006-2007, Bryant also became the first player since 1964 to score 45 points or more in four consecutive games, joining Chamberlain and Baylor as the only players ever to do so

2006-2007, Bryant scored 50 points, making him the second player in NBA history to have 4 straight 50 point games behind Wilt Chamberlain

2006-2007, Bryant finished the year with a total of ten 50-plus point games, becoming the only player beside Wilt Chamberlain in 1961–62 and 1962–63 to do so in one season.

In February of 2010, Kobe Bryant passed Jerry West to become the franchise’s leading scorer.

Love him or Hate him, Kobe Bryant is one of the most feared clutch and most polarizing players the NBA has ever seen. He is the closest thing to Michael Jordan we will ever see. EVER!!!!

Proposed Blockbuster 4 Team LAKER DEAL FOR GASOL!!!!!

SALARY CAP RULES

Teams above the cap (or teams below the cap but would end up more than $100,000 over the cap following a trade) cannot acquire more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary they trade away. Under the 2011 CBA, teams that remain below the luxury tax threshold even after the trade can acquire the lesser of 150% plus $100,000, or 100% plus $5 million, of the salary they trade away.[5] There is no lower limit—teams may divest themselves of as much salary as they wish in a trade.

All teams involved are above the cap: Cap 58 million, Luxury Tax 70.3 million

Lakers get 3 players and give up 1:

Bargani 10,000,000
Ridnour 4,000,000
Derrick Williams 4,947,840

Lakers before trade 100,365,744
Lakers after trade 100,313, 584

125% + 100,000 of 19,000,000 (salary they traded away) is 23,750,000
They acquired 18,947,840
18,947,840 is less than 23,750,000. They didn’t go over that by acquiring Williams, Bargani and Ridnour.

GOOD

LOGIC: Lakers get rid of Gasol who since Mike D'Antoni arrived has been pretty much getting phased out of the Lakers plans. On top of that, Gasol has regressed and many blame him for the Lakers having to bring all of this expensive talent in so with that, the frequent year after year trade talks finally end as Gasol goes to Minnesota. Gasol wants more touches in the post and D'Antoni wants a power forward who can spread the floor. Williams and Bargnani does this perfectly for D'Antoni while still getting younger with and accomplishing the goal of better complimenting the future franchise star in Dwight Howard.

Timberwolves get 1 player and give up 6:

Gasol 19,000,000 million to Wolves

Timberwolves before trade 65,605,005
Timberwolves after trade 65,659,096

125% + 100,000 of 18,945,909 (salary they traded away) is 23,682,386
They acquired 19,000,000
19,000,000 is less than 24,000,372. They didn’t go over that by acquiring Gasol.

GOOD

LOGIC: Minnesota has coveted Pau Gasol for a while and it has been reported earlier that they were building a package around Derrick Williams and Nikola Pekovic. If they are willing to trade throw-ins Luke Ridnour or JJ Barea (I can't see why not b/c they have enough depth at PG.) who are very close in salary and Memphis does not push for Budinger instead of Martell Webster, I can't see this not working. The best thing to do it to think Vlade Divac in the final stages of his career with Rick Adelman in Sacramento. He went to Sacramento at 30 and played 7 long years there. Gasol is 32 fits that role perfectly. He gets paired with emerging superstar Kevin Love and Adelman gets the two passing big men he loves. Gasol won't give The T-Wolves the Divac flopping but he still has to skills to flourish in an offense like this for years. Also, that pairs him back-up with his Spanish National teammate Ricky Rubio.
Toronto gets 3 players and give up 3:

Rudy Gay 16,460,532 million
Bayless 3,100,000 million
Selby 762,195
Stiemsma 2,575,000 million

Toronto before trade 59,279,035
Toronto after trade 59,113,442

125% + 100,000 of 23,063,320 (salary they traded away) is 28,829,150
They acquired 22,897,727
22,897,727 is less than 28,829,150. They didn’t go over by acquiring Gay, Speights and Stiemsma

GOOD

LOGIC:  Firstly, Toronto has added C Valanciunus, PF, C Amir Johnson, C, Aaron Gray and PF,C Ed Davis all in the last few years. Does that sound like a team in love with the oft-injured Spaniard PF, C Andrea Bargnani. Well, they finally get rid of their former number #1 overall pick. From one soap opera to another, Toronto's on and off love relationship with Jose Calderon finally ends as he will probably not be retained anyway in the offseason. They don't get a superstar but they get the best player they have had since Vince Carter. Kyle Lowry and  Rudy Gay are a pretty good combination to matchup with young athletic guys like Demar Derozan who just signed an extension, Amir Johnson and Ed Davis. Also, they still bring Landry Fields, Greg Stiemsma and Bayless in as quality bench players. Some would say this is where Bayless resurrected his career so he ends up back where he wanted to be the whole time and Toronto comes out cheaper than the 4.2 million dollar offer they withdrew last summer. Lastly, they get summer league sensation Josh Selby as a throw in.

Memphis gets 6 players and give up 3:

Calderon 10,500,000 million to Memphis
Terrence Ross 2,563,320 million to Memphis
Pekovic 4,640,000 million to Memphis
Josh Howard 1,113,560 to Memphis
Martell Webster to 600,000
Louis Amundson 1,069,509

Memphis before trade 74,127,785
Memphis after trade 73,615,837

125% + 100,000 of 20,322,727(salary they traded away) is 25,403,408
They acquired 20,620,389
20,620,389 is less than 25,403,408. They didn’t go over by acquiring Calderon, Ross, Pekovic, Josh Howard, Amundson and Martel Webster

GOOD

LOGIC: Memphis has a brand-new ownership and a revamped front office. John Hollinger and Jason Levien are in, longtime personnel gurus the Barones are out, and Chris Wallace’s current level of power as holdover GM is unclear. They had an exciting 2011 playoff run without Gay and that is not far from their minds. Also, they still come out with high draft pick Terrenece Ross who fills the much needed shooting void that Memphis has been clamoring about for years. By no means does Memphis get better with this trade but they can clear some space for next year because they don't have much relief coming next off of their 74 million dollar payroll next year. Additionally, if they wanted to save this year and Minnesota is interested in not trading Howard, Webster and Amundson to eat and few more dollars and keep some more of their depth,  Memphis could save another 2.7 million dollars off of the 4 million they are over the luxury tax threshold this year. This deal is good financially for Minnesota either way.

QUARTERBACK RATING CALCULATOR

Who is the best 15 active QB's in the NFL today? Who knows? Is there a way you can figure this out? Is there an accurate way that you, I or any of us can compute this? I say yes and I also say that I done just that. That's right!!!!! The Realist has done it!!!! This is SUREFIRE!!!!! Aye......homers.......... feel me to look it over. Feel free to comment on it. This point system is based on there career achievements up until this point in their careers. The only thing that is up for debate is the playoff moments and if we remove that the only position that changes is Romo and Vick so feel free to try to check my formula. You can even feel free to openly dispute my list if necessary but I assure you one thing and one thing only:

I think with my MIND and not my HEART so you won't find any mistakes.

What is the Verdict on Mike Vick?

Last night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Michael Vick looked horrible. He made poor decisions playing the entire first half and ended up 5-12, 47 yards with 3 interceptions and a quarterback rating of  a whooping 13.5. Look, I am glad he is back in the NFL but now that he is back in the NFL, I can stop defending his criminal actions simply because he is a black and I more often than not believe in second chances. I wanted him to get another chance and he has gotten it but now it's football time and the football reality is he never was a great passer and one year was not enough to convince me. Great quarterbacks have to consistently work hard every year and push for greatness to be consistently great every year. Drew Brees feel off in the interception category last year. Who knows why but did him becoming a true NFL star after the Saints won the super bowl play a part in that? I am a firm believer that distractions from the outside can disrupt the concentration of the best of them and that is why I predicted that the Saints would not win the Superbowl last year. The truth about last year was that Vick was getting praised all year last year and for good reason. He played well and his comeback story was a great story no matter how you look at it but now it will go back to normal…........

Now he has the regular media attention with just being a starting Quarterback in the NFL, the attention for just being Michael Vick, plus all the attention from the moves the Eagles made in the offseason and let's not forget THE GREAT Vince Young who never consistently showed a clear path or progression to becoming great saying "The Eagles Are A Dream Team".

Okay, I agree that I am persecuting fast but this is my "Lebron Reaction" to people putting him on a pedestal so fast. The first thing we have to remember is that Vick has always been an exciting football player first before anything else. he makes spectacular plays but that does not necessarily translate into consistent great QB play and most importantly, that does not translate into consistent team success. If you look at his passing numbers in Atlanta, they were not even average QB good. For the sake of argument, let's combine his passing numbers with his running numbers. Also, it's only fair to include his interceptions with his fumbles lost to come up with a stat for his total turnovers considering I am factoring his running numbers in for his total yards and total touchdowns.

2002 3713 yards 24 TD's 17 TO's 8-6-1 playoffs, lost in 2nd Round
2003 injured
2004 3215 yards 17 TD's 28 TO's 11-4 playoffs, lost in 2nd Round
2005 3009 yards 21 TD's 24 TO's, 8-7 no playoffs
2006 3513 yards 22 TD,s 22 TO's, 7-9 no playoffs
2007-2008 jail
2009 bench in Philadelphia
2010 3694 yards, 30 TD's, 17 TO's, 8-3 playoffs, lost in 1st round

In his best season in Atlanta, if you combine his rushing numbers with his passing numbers, the fact is that he is not an elite quarterback. Some people may tell you a different story but I say in terms of statistics combined with overall team success, Vick has done it one, maybe two years so stop it, " He is not elite!!!!" Not only that but you also have to consider that Vick did not play 4 games because of injury last year so everyone knows that with his style of play, he has a higher possibility to get hurt. Consequently whether fair or not, you have to factor his higher probability of injury in your evaluation.

Now, since I think I established that Vick has never been elite, my final judgement on last night is that you can't look at Vick and say "that's just preseason". Matt Schaub is not considered elite, or Eli Manning or Jay Cutler or Joe Flacco and I am sure if they had a game like that we would all be saying, "Wow, Eli had a bad game........ the Giants first team look poo." We have to remember that Vick is not Brees, Brady, Rivers, Manning and even Rodgers so we can't say the infamous "he had a bad preseason game". those quarterbacks I mentioned above have either won a Superbowl or they have been consistent for at least 3 years so honesty, they deserve the benefit of the doubt. Vick doesn't. I am not saying Vick won't become elite but he is not there now so is totally reasonable to be concerned if Vick plays pitiful which he did last night.

In addition to that, if we stop and think further, you just have to be convinced  beyond a shadow of a doubt that every defensive coordinator in the league was studying film on Vick all offseason. They will adjust so there is no sneaking up on anyone this year. The question is does Vick have the same fire, work ethic he had last year when he admitted himself that he did not before when he was in Atlanta? Bad habits are hard to break and good habits are not easy to maintain. He has his 15 million dollar contract, he is a star again, he has controversial articles in GQ and he has a dream team according to the GREAT Vince Young so the pressure to win is at an all time high. Why should I automatically believe that he has turned the corner when he has never shown it consistently before as an elite quarterback or an elite hard worker?...I don't know the answer but this season will go a long way in telling the tale.

One day you can be the hero of the sports world and the next day you might get criticized so much you can't even bare to stand it. I guess that is life as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Greatest Basketball Players Ever List

1) Russell
2) Jordan
3) Jabaar
4) Chamberlain
5) Magic/Kobe
6) George Mikan/Havlicek
9) Duncan/Shaq
10) Bird / Dr. J
12) Oscar Robertson (just flipped flop him and West. He averaged a triple double but Kareem carried him in the finals but I think he was better)
13) Jerry West (Wilt Chamberlain won Finals MVP in 1972 which is West only championship. He won 1969 Finals MVP but they lost)
14) Bob Cousy (maybe should be higher but who will I take down?)
15) Hakeem Olajuwon/Moses Malone

Reason why Havlicek is on there and not Pippen just in case you were about to say something, Havlicek has that signature moment with

Greer is putting the ball in play. He gets it out deep and Havlicek steals it! Over to Sam Jones! Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over...It's all over! Johnny Havlicek is being mobbed by the fans! It's all over! Johnny Havlicek stole the ball!"

Let me tell you what’s funny about that signature moment though. That was in the 1965 Eastern Conference Finals. LOL!!!!! How many times have you seen that play? 1 million.

Still though, Pippen does not even have anything like that though.
